General Information

ADVISERS

Each student at Dallas Lutheran School is assigned an adviser to assist with the student’s academic, spiritual and personal growth. An advising group is comprised of students in similar grade levels. The major goal of Advising is to provide each student with a faculty member who knows him/her and who is concerned for the welfare of the student.

CAMPUS RESTRICTIONS

Our campus is closed (no visitors or parents without permission); students are not to be in the parking lots during school hours.

VISITORS

All visitors, including parents, must report to the school office before proceeding to any part of the campus. Students who desire to bring a visitor to school (i.e. lunch time) must receive permission ONE DAY IN ADVANCE from the Principal. Visitors are expected to conduct themselves according to the regulations, including the dress code, of our school. Visitors must carry a pass from the Principal.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

If a conflict should arise, the student is encouraged to follow the guidelines of Matthew 18:15-16 in order to resolve the conflict in a Christian manner. Part of this process may involve the adviser as a confidant and/or mediator on the student’s behalf.

DRIVERS-STUDENTS

Students are permitted to drive to school. Student drivers are required to register their cars with the Business Manager indicating parental permission to drive to school.  The form to be completed will also verify permission for carrying passengers.  Written permission for carrying passengers must be obtained from the parents of BOTH driver and passengers. STUDENTS MAY LOSE THEIR PRIVILEGE TO DRIVE IF THE PROPER PAPERWORK IS NOT ON FILE IN THE BUSINESS MANAGER'S OFFICE.

EARLY DISMISSAL AND LATE ARRIVAL

Being a secondary student is a full-time job and should be the primary focus for the energy and time of each student. Early dismissal or late arrival is an exception to the norm and must receive special permission. The following represents procedures and regulations to govern early dismissals or late arrivals:
  1. No late arrivals or early dismissals for grades 7-10.
  2. Each student at Dallas Lutheran School must be enrolled in a minimum of five (5) classes.
  3. No dismissal during the middle of the daily schedule is permitted.  Once a student is on campus, he/she must remain for  the scheduled class day.
  4. A student receiving permission for an early dismissal must be off campus no later than 15 minutes after his/her last class session ends.
  5. A student using permission for late arrival must arrive on campus no more than 15 minutes before his/her first class session and must be on time for his/her first class.
  6. All students will pay full tuition regardless of the duration of their class day.
  7. Permission of the parents/guardians and the student’s adviser must be given when making application on a special form provided for this purpose.
  8. A student using an early dismissal or late arrival will be given only ONE warning for breaking the rules stated above.
Should a second infraction occur, the privilege will be taken away for the remainder of the term, and the student must re-apply for this privilege.

SCHOOL HOURS

Students may be in the building from 7:00am until 4:00pm.  The only exception to this will be students receiving extra help from a teacher, extracurricular activities, students with late pick-up, or early arrival.

EMERGENCY CLOSING

In the event of bad weather, our school cancellation report may be heard on TV station Channel 8, 94.9 KLTY FM radio, and posted at www.cancellations.com. and www.nbc5i.com.  You may also call Dallas Lutheran School at 214-349-8912, extension 500, after 6:15am.  Please do not call the Principal/Executive Director or faculty. Note: The DLS Webmaster will attempt to post the school's status ASAP on the school website.

EMERGENCY DRILLS

General safety requires that from time to time we will have fire drills during the year. Unannounced drills are held to acquaint students with instructions for leaving the building in an orderly manner. It is a matter of highest importance to understand the Fire Drill regulations posted in every room. These regulations give specific directions for moving out of a particular area. Walk (don’t run) and remain quiet and calm. Once outside, absolute silence is maintained until the “all clear” is given. In case of actual fire, roll will be taken.  No one should cause delays in carrying out Fire Drill regulations.

HALL PASSES

Students who are in the hallway other than the normal passing period MUST have their hall pass section of their Agenda book initialed by a teacher.

INSURANCE

An optional insurance policy is available at the time of orientation. This policy covers the student from the time he/she leaves home until arriving home after school. All students are expected to have some form of insurance protection.

LIBRARY USE

The purpose of the library is to provide up-to-date research resources for school reports and papers.  Electronic resources include SIRS, InfoTrac, GaleNet, Encarta, and internet access.  Print resources include books, Dallas Morning News and various magazines.

Rules:
  1. A maximum of 25 people are allowed in the library, and full classes get first priority; students visiting from a study hall may be asked to leave if a class comes to do research.
  2. Talking needs to be kept to a minimum and needs to be work-related.
  3. Students are not to sit on the floor or congregate around the easy chairs.
  4. Students are not permitted to bring book bags, backpacks, etc., into the library.

Checkout/Overdue/Lost Books

Students may check out up to three books from the library for a period of three weeks. The due date will be stamped on the outside of the book when it is checked out. If it is not returned by that date, the student will be charged $.25 for each day it is late.  It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to know the overdue date of the book(s); however, students will receive weekly overdue notices from their advisers. If students do not pay the fine within four weeks, a note will be sent to their parents, and the fine will be turned over to the Business Office. If students lose books, they will be charged a $10 processing fee plus the replacement cost of the book.

LOCKER ASSIGNMENT

Students will be assigned one locker and are to use ONLY that locker. Any lock found lying around will be picked up and reissued only after the payment of a fine. Books and other materials that belong to students are to be placed in the lockers, not in front of the lockers. Lockers are the property of the school and are subject to inspection with permission of the Principal/Executive Director at any time. The student is responsible for any damages incurred and may be charged the cost of any repairs\cleaning. Students are encouraged to lock their locks on their lockers.

LOST AND FOUND

Any articles left at school will be put in a lost and found box in the office. All articles left in the gymnasium will be held in the coaches’ office.

LUNCH

During lunch students should be sure to observe a few basic rules: paying attention when announcements are made, closing their mouths when chewing food and never talking with full mouths, not throwing any food, and disposing of all sacks, cans, and garbage in the trash containers. Students are to remain in the lunch area until a faculty member has given them permission to leave.

MEDICATION

Students requiring medication, both prescription and over-the-counter, should have their names placed on file with the school secretary. All medication must be left with the secretary during the school day. Students desiring to take pain reliever must have a signed note on file in the school office.

OFFICE ASSISTANCE

Each semester students with available time will be asked to serve as office assistants. These are responsible positions providing valuable assistance.

TELEPHONE

The school telephones in the office are for school business and are NOT for student use.

CELL PHONES

Cell phones are a reality. Cell phones need to stay in the “off” position and out of sight. Cell phones that are seen or heard during the school day (8:00 AM – 3:30 PM) will be held by an administrator until a parent may pick them up. Subsequent issues will result in the phone being held by school administration for a longer time period.

Open food and liquid of any kind does not belong in the main building. Closed lunches are to be kept in lockers and carried to the lunch area.
