Sophomore Info

Make the best grades possible and get involved in school, church and community service.

CURRICULUM

Take all the math, science, history, foreign language, and English that you can. College scholarship programs look for students who stretch themselves academically. Consider taking Advanced Placement (AP) Courses. Begin to think about career goals and match those with course work and college requirements.

  • Review diploma goal.

  • Repair or strengthen GPA…there’s still time!!!

  • Be inducted into the NHS in February.

COLLEGE DAYS

  • SEPTEMBER. Dallas Lutheran School participates in the Trinity Christian College Day Program where more than 200 college campuses are represented. DLS Sophomores are encouraged to attend WITH THEIR PARENTS. This is a good introduction to the college application process. College and university representatives will be much more attentive if a parent is also present.
  • SEPTEMBER. Christian College Fair at Dallas Lutheran sponsored by the National Association of Christian College Admissions Professionals (NACCAP), is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and make contact with Christian colleges across the United States.

TESTING

  • OCTOBER. Take the PSAT (practice again!) and the PLAN (compare results from previous year; a 100 point gain is desirable).

CAMPUS VISITS

  • SPRING BREAK. Consider visiting college campuses. Call the admissions office of the campus to arrange a visit.

EXTRA CURRICULAR

  • Continue to build extra-curricular experiences. Quality of experience is more important than quantity, so get involved in clubs or programs that you really enjoy. Become a leader in activities.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS

  • Take a hard look at your spiritual gifts. As a student, you have a responsibility to develop academically. As a child of God, you have a responsibility to develop spiritually for the glory of God.

SERVICE HOURS

  • The summer between your sophomore and junior year is the time to begin work on your 80 hours of Community Service required for graduation. To ensure credit, each project must be authorized by the College Guidance Director. Appropriate service projects would be work at church, hospitals, humane society, soup kitchens, mission trips, etc. Credit WILL NOT BE GIVEN for babysitting, driving other students to school or work done for family or immediate relatives. In other words, the project MUST SERVE A NEED FOR AN ORGANIZED NON-PROFIT GROUP FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE COMMUNITY.

REMINDER: 90% GPA and top 25% rank to be competitive for scholarships!
