English

Dallas Lutheran School's English Department is dedicated to two things. The first, naturally, is reading.  We believe - believe it or not - that all our students can learn to love reading - regardless of their background in reading. We have one of the finest literature curriculae that you will find in any high school anywhere. Our students study and analyze and discuss and research and write about books by Joyce, Faulkner, Dante, Homer, Virgil, and, of course, Shakespeare. Writing is the other main issue of our department. Our students do both formal and informal writing. We use models to help students see what clear, cogent writing and quoting and organizing and arguing and defending and analyzing and defining and narrating and being amusing looks like. And we meet with students to revise their work. In other words, we actually teach writing; we don't just grade writing.
