Physical Education
The study of physical education excompasses both the physical and mental aspects of a person. DLS Physical Education courses are designed to help students make responsible decisions and learn skills necesary to obtain and maintain a high level of physical wellness or quality of life. Various sectionals will be covered in the areas of "team sports" for the middle school and "life-time sports" for the high school.
710 School Health
Required Course, Prerequisite: None, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
School Health is a required class to be taken by all students before graduation from Dallas Lutheran School. This class is usually taken during the freshman year, but is open to any student who has not received credit in health. Topics in this class include the process for proper decision making, basic human anatomy, drug and alcohol prevention, and nutrition. All topics are taught with a Christian perspective and theme.
715 Physical Education I
Required Course, Prerequisite: None, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This class is two units of credit and is required for graduation. This course is designed as an introduction to physical education. The focus of this class is to give each student exposure to many facets of the field of physical education. Included in this class are units covering the basic skills and rules for a variety of team sports. Cardiovascular activities are included along with fitness testing. Giving your best effort in each day’s activity rather than winning or losing is most important in this class. Written test will be used as a tool for evaluation.
725 Physical Education II
Required Course, Prerequisite: None, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This class is two units of credit and is required for graduation. This course is designed as a continuation of the 715 course. The focus of this class is to give each student exposure to many facets of the field of physical education. Included in this class are units covering the basic skills and rules for a variety of team sports. Cardiovascular activities are included along with fitness testing. Giving your best effort in each day’s activity rather than winning or losing is most important in this class. Written test may be used as a tool for evaluation.
732 Dual & Individual Sports
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. The focus of this class is on non-team oriented sports. The idea is to expose students to activities they can do for a lifetime. Some of the games included in this class are Horseshoes, Bocce, Frisbee golf, and croquette. One goal of this class is to help students find productive ways to use leisure time.
733 Personal Fitness
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None - Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. Students in this class will learn to define fitness, evaluate their own fitness level, design a fitness routine to follow and monitor their own progress. Aerobic and anaerobic conditioning will be included. Tracking improvements in body fat percentage is just one tool available to students. Weight training may be included in this class. Some classroom instruction and written test will be part of this class.
734 Track & Field
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None - Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. The focus of this class is on learning the skills required for participating in a variety of track and field events. An example of such skills would include throwing the shot-put and discus, long jumping, and running the 100 and 200 meter foot race.
735 Team Sports
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None - Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. The focus of this class is on learning the skills, and rules for participating in sports that require 5 or more players per team. Students will learn about and play games in such sports as floor hockey, basketball, volleyball, soccer and softball.
736 Physical Conditioning
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
Summary:
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. This class is for the serious fitness minded student. Weight training and distance running is the main focus of this class. Students will be expected to set and strive for high goals for developing and maintaining a superior level of fitness.
738 Advanced Basketball & Volleyball
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. This course is for the avid volleyball and basketball enthusiast. Besides playing games and class tournaments strategies and team techniques are taught and employed. Drill for developing and improving individual skills will also be taught and practiced.
739 Softball
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. This class needs a minimum of 16 students to function. Although individual skill improvement through drills will be done the main focus of this class will be to play the game of softball. Some strategies involving the finer points of the game will be covered and employed.
740 Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. This course is intended to be a basic introduction to first aid and the care of injuries. This course is not a first aid certification class. Learning the do’s and don’ts for emergency situations and the proper care of the most common athletic injuries are covered. A lab fee is required to cover the cost of materials. The student will learn such skills as how to tape an ankle, knee, wrist and fingers.
741 Advanced Recreation
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. If it can be considered physical and recreational it might just show up in this course. Almost anything goes from roller blades and skate boards, to flag football. Students may need to supply their own equipment. This class is always expanding and changing to included the latest craze.
742 Physical Education Assistant
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This course is designed to allow those students interested in teaching physical education an opportunity to help work with 7th and 8th graders in a classroom setting. They are allowed to interact with students from helping to supervise to helping to run the days activities. Student aids will also assist the instructor in set up and take down and anything else that will increase the instructors effectiveness.
743 Advanced Personal Fitness
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. This course is designed to concentrate on teaching students the skills of evaluating and maintaining their personal fitness. Weight training will probably be a big part of this class. Aerobics videos have also been used on off days. Some classroom instruction and written test will be a part of this course.
744 Weight Training
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. Pumping Iron is the main focus of this class. This class is not just for athletes but can be a great benefit for anyone. Individual programs will be developed by the instructor to help each student reach their own personal goals. Students will be in the weight room at least four days a week. Proper form and safety will be stressed at all times. Students can lift to gain size and strength or to increase overall muscle tone.
745 Introduction to Golf
Elective Course, Prerequisite: None -Grade 11 & 12, Semesters: 1, Credits: 2
This is a two unit course and is considered an elective, which may be used to satisfy any remaining physical education requirements. This course is offered as needed. This class is designed to teach the basics for participating in the game of golf. This course is limited to 15 students because of the need for more individual teaching and because of safety and space concerns. Golf terminology, the basic rules and etiquette are all part of this class. Introductory skills include the grip, the swing, proper alignment, and putting tips. A fee may be charged if the class goes to the driving range. A function of this class is to develop a appreciation for an activity that can be continued for a lifetime.
Personal Fitness Goals
Goal #1
Each student will be required to participate in a weightlifting pre-test to determine their starting point. Each student will complete the personal fitness survey to determine his individual goals. This information will allow the instructor to tailor each program to best meet these goals.
Goal #2
Each student will be required to participate fully each day according to her personal fitness plan. This means each student must dress out in the proper clothing and complete each day's physical requirements.
Goal #3
Each student will be required to participate in all game activities on the off days from lifting weights.
