Service Hours
As part of their education, DLS student are required to perform 80+ hours of community service during their junior and senior year, creating lifelong habits.
GOALS
• To respond to the Gospel in a tangible way.
• To gain experience through service-related opportunities.
• To provide volunteer effort which impacts the good and well-being of the community.
• To represent Dallas Lutheran Schol in the community.
• To build a "community service" component in personal resumes.
GUIDELINES
• Service hour credit may be earned in the summer between grades 10 and 11. Students may submit hours up to the beginning of May of grade 12.• Service hours may not be earned for projects sponsored by parents, relatives, or personal friends.
• Service hours may be earned at Dallas Lutheran School (up to 40 hours).
• Service hours may not be earned for projects where there is a compensation or recognition.
• Service hours must be earned outside the school day; Service Hour credits may not be earned in context of an extracurricular activity.
• Service hour projects must serve the needs or benefit an organization or community agency.
RESOURCES
There are an infinite number of organizations and community agencies through service hours can be arranged. Local congregation (VBS, Sunday School teaching, mission trips, special church projects), civic organizations (Dallas Arboretum, Dallas Zoo, public libraries) and health care agencies (hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers) are among the most popular choices of DLS students.
PROCEDURE
1. Obtain an "Authorization and Validation Report" form from the College Guidance Director. This will ensure that your project hours will qualify AND it will provide you with the document necessary to submit hours.2. Submit your "Authorization and Validation Report" to someone qualified to verify your project hours at the conclusion of your work.
3. Sign the "Authorization and Validaton Report", write a brief explanation of your experience and return the form to the College Guidance Director.
